MATH 0076 SYLLABUS - SPRING 2005

  Spring Semester 2005

·         First class:  Tuesday, Jan.18 (please adjust if your class does not meet on Tuesday).

·         Last day to drop (tuition refund available): Monday, Jan.31.

·         Spring recess:  No classes are held during the week Mar.6—Mar.13.

·         Last day to withdraw (no refund): Monday, Mar.28.

·         Last class: Monday, May 2 (please adjust if your class does not meet on Monday).

 

Prerequisites for Math 0076 are  a grade of C or higher in Math C075, Calculus I with Applications, or transfer credit for a course equivalent to Math C075.

 

Text:   Hughes-Hallett, Gleasom, McCallum et al., Calculus: Single Variable, Third Edition,  John Wiley and Sons, 2002.

 

Objective: The purpose of Math 0076 is to learn concepts, techniques and applications of integral calculus and differential equations.

 

Syllabus

 Math 0076  meets four hours a week for fourteen weeks, a total of 56 hours.  There are 44 hours in the syllabus, which leaves 12 hours for review and testing.

 

Chapter 5: Key Concept: The Definite Integral (6 hours)

Cover all sections.

 

Chapter 6: Constructing  Antiderivatives (6 hours)

Cover all sections .

 

Chapter 7: Integration (12 hours)

Cover all sections.

 

Chapter 8: Using The Definite Integral (8 hours)

Cover Sections 8.1-8.4. Section 8.5 is optional: most students in this class are biology majors, and applications to economics  do not appeal to them. Sections  8.6 and 8.7 should be omitted.

 

Chapter 11: Differential Equations (12 hours)

Cover Sections 11.1-11.6. Section 11.7 is optional, and Sections  11.8-11.11 ought to be omitted.

 

Examinations:  two tests and a departmental final exam.

1.        Test 1 (2 hours duration) week of Monday, February 21

2.        Test 2 (2 hours duration) week of Monday, April 4

3.        Final Exam (2 hours duration)  Thursday, May 5, from 2pm to 4pm

Please note that this course has a departmental final exam, which will cover all of the material in the non-optional sections . The final will take place on Thursday,  May5, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
