QUIZ #2 will be on MONDAY 14 Oct -------------------------------- WHAT YOU WILL NEED ------------------ Pen. Name. ID Number. Scrap paper. CRIB SHEET PERMITTED! Yes, for this quiz only, you are permitted to write anything you want on a single 8.5x11in sheet of paper, prepared beforehand by you, and you may consult that crib sheet (but nobody else's, and nothing else, i.e. no books, etc.) during the quiz!! (You will not really need, but they might help: calculator, ruler, graph paper.) Here is what quiz will cover. Actually it may not cover all these things since not enough time, but I'm not going to tell you which of the below will be on the quiz and which won't, so to be safest, know them all. The quiz problems are going to be a lot easier than the homework problems, closer to the level of a COW problem, but not that easy. READING ------- All chapter 2. Chapter 3, sections 3.1-3.5 and 3.9-3.10 only. Chapter 4, section 4.1 only. Appendix D (p.577) on "Newton's method". "Useful notes" on my math75 web page. SUBJECTS COVERED ---------------- Derivatives of functions: * definition as a limit, * geometrical meaning as a slope, * when and where a function is "differentiable" * know how to find the derivative of any formula by using basic formulas (such as: the derivative of sin(x) is cos(x)) and combining rules such as chain rule, product rule, sum rule, quotient rule. * know how to do sanity checks so that you can hopefully realize if your derivative formula is insane! First and second derivatives. Increasing, decreasing, and concave-up and concave-down functions. How to tell if have a min or a max. Inflection points. Uses of derivatives: to find minima, maxima, optimize stuff, linear approximations to functions, Newton's numerical method for rootfinding, L'Hopital's rule.
