Text: Abstract Algebra, by D. Dummit and R. Foote, second edition
Schedule revision: Class is scheduled to meet on Monday and Wednesday from Monday, August 30 through Wednesday, December 8. There will be no class or office hours on Monday, September 6 (Labor Day), and I will be unable to be here on Wednesday, September 15 and on Monday, September 20. I will also not hold office hours on Tuesday, August 31, Friday September 3 or Tuesday, September 14.
In order to make up for the missed classes, I plan to schedule extra classes on Friday, September 17 and on Friday, September 24.
Homework:
There will be two types of homework problems - those which are to be handed in and which will constitute part of the grade, and other problems which you are expected to do but which will not be routinely collected.
Problems to be handed in will be due one week after they are assigned. Fully justified solutions to these problems, representing your own work, are to be submitted by the due dates above. You are not to collaborate on these solutions with anyone other than me.
Each new solution is to begin on a new page. Make sure you leave adequate space for me to make comments. Word processed or typed solutions are preferable, but solutions written IN BLUE OR BLACK INK are acceptable, provided that they are clearly legible. Submissions in pencil or red ink will not be accepted.
In addition to the hand-in problems, numerous problems will be assigned each class to be done for the following class. (A list of these problems for the first chapter may be found on the next page.) Although these problems are not to be handed in, you may do so if you would like me to correct them. You will also have an opportunity to ask me to go over some of them at the beginning of the following class, so it is important that they be attempted in a timely fashion. It is perfectly acceptable to me if you collaborate on these problems with your classmates; in fact, I encourage you to do so.
Grading:
The homework problems to be handed in will constitute 30% of the final grade. In addition, there will be a midterm examination, worth 30% and a (cumulative) final exam worth 40%.
