Textbook:  For All Practical Purposes, 4th edition

Syllabus:

Chapter 9:  Identification Numbers  Chapter 12:  Weighted Voting
Chapter 10:  Transmitting Information  Chapter 17:  Growth and Form
Chapter 11:  Voting Systems  Chapter 18:  Geometric Growth

We will cover as much of the above material as time permits. If necessary, we will skip Chapter 12 and/or Chapter 18.

Grading:

There will be three tests, each of which will last one hour. In addition, there will be several quizzes, each of which will be short (10 or 15 minutes). Grading will be as follows:

Test 1 (Ch. 9 & 10)  100 points
Test 2 (Ch. 11 & 12)  100 points
Test 3 (Ch. 17 & 18)  100 points
Quizzes (Total)  100 points
Class Participation  50 points
Total:  450 points

Other important information:

Tests: If you must miss a test date, let me know as soon as possible so that we can arrange for you to make up the test. In this event, you will have to provide written proof to verify your excuse (for example: a note from your doctor, the car mechanic's bill, etc.) for missing the test.

Quizzes: Each quiz will be worth 10 points. We will have at least 10 quizzes; your grade will be based on your best ten quizzes.

Class Participation is essentially 50 "free" points. As long as you attend class regularly (see "Attendance" below), participate in class discussions and do not disrupt the class, you will get all 50 points. (I feel certain that everyone in the class will get all 50 points for class Participation.)

Attendance: You are expected to attend every class, if possible. If you can't be in class, let me know beforehand (or get in touch with me as soon as possible afterward) to let me know why you were unable to attend.
