The following exericses constitute a minimal assignment. Note that there are many unassigned exercises in the text which are similar to the ones listed below. You are strongly encouraged to try some or all of the unassigned exercises (in addition to the suggested exercises).

Any material covered by the following exercises is fair game for the tests. Thus, even though the homework will not be graded directly, it will still have a huge indirect impact on your grade via the tests. It's important to understand that the only effective way to learn mathematics is through lots and lots of practice. (In other words: math is not a spectator sport!)

Exercises marked with an asterisk (*) are "challenge problems." It is not expected that all students will attempt these particular exercises; they are only for those who enjoy a challenge every now and then. (These exercises may occasionally appear on tests as extra-credit questions...)

The "due date" for a section is the date on which exercises from that section will be discussed in class.
