Beginning NEXT week, note the following changes in our class schedule:
First of all, there will be no class meeting on Monday, April

So for example, here is the schedule for the next week and a half:
| Mon. 4/2 |
No class. |
| Wed. 4/4 |
Lecture on section 8A |
| Fri. 4/6 |
Go over homework from 8A
|
| Mon. 4/9 |
QUIZ, section 8A |
|
Wed. 4/11
|
Lecture on section 8B |
...etc.
Please email
me if you have any questions about this new schedule.

February 23:
Quiz #4. Solutions to the sample
midterm are now available. Make sure to try to do the midterm
on your own first, before looking at the solutions! (If you read
the solutions first, then the sample midterm will be of almost no
use to you.)

Mailing List Information. You may find it convenient
to access the class mailing list over the web, rather than just by email.
The URL for the MATH55-9 mailing list is http://cronkite.temple.edu/archives/math55-9.html.
From this page, you may read all messages sent to the list (sorted
by month), post a new message to the list, or change your email settings.
(NOTE: If you edit your email settings, I ask that you
leave the "subscription type" set on "regular," at least until the list
becomes much more active than it is now.)

February 2:
Mailing List Problems. A few of you mentioned in class
that you've had difficulty joining the class mailing list by email.
An alternative may be to go the the list's web page: http://cronkite.temple.edu/archives/math55-9.html.
From this page, click on "Join or Leave the list," and try your luck there.
Let
me know if you try this, and tell me if it worked for you.
Quiz #2. The quiz is available on the Quizzes
page, along with solutions. Grades will be posted soon.

January 30:
MSRC Supplementary Instruction Sessions.
The MSRC (Math &
Science Resources Center) will hold "Supplementary Instruction Session"
once per week, on Wednesday, 10:30-12:30, in 102 Curtis Hall.
This is a group tutoring session which you may wish to attend.
Savings Plan Calculator? I'm still trying to find a good one
online. "FinAid" (the site I linked to for their Compound Interest
calculator) has one, but it assumes deposits are made at the beginning
of each month, rather than at the end (which is the assumption made by
our textbook). So, its results would not match yours.
When I find something more useful, I'll post a link here. Let
me know if you find anything!

January 25:
New Office Hours. Due to a schedule conflict, I've had to reschedule
my office hours. From now on, my office hours will be Tuesday/Thursday,
1:40-3:30 PM. Please make a note of this change. (Of course,
you may still schedule an appointment if you'd prefer to meet with me at
some other time.)
Mailing List. I have set up a mailing list for this class.
To join the mailing list, go to Computer
Services' Listserv Page, click on "II. Subscribing to a list,"
and follow the instructions given there. The "listname" is MATH55-9.
If you have any problems signing up for the list, please let me know right
away. Every student is expected to join the mailing list.
You can use the list to discuss lectures, HW, etc., with the rest of
the class. I will use it to alert you to new updates or additions
to the class web page, and to disseminate any information or comments which
we didn't have time for in class. Hopefully we can find other productive
uses for the mailing list as well.

January 19:
Section 5A, Compound Interest. If you'd care for some
additional practice at solving compound interest problems, try the following
link to the FinAid
Compound Interest Calculator. You can practice solving for A
(accumulation) by selecting any values you like for the principal, interest
rate and frequency. Make up your own problems, try to solve them
on your own, then use the Compound Interest Calculator to check your result.
Note: on the Calculator page, "Nominal Annual Interest Rate"
is the same thing as "Annual Percentage Rate" (APR) in our
textbook.
Note: the result is given as a percentage; the total accumulation
is equal to the principal times this percentage. For example, if
P=2000
and the "Compounded Rate of Return" is 140%, then the accumulation
is 2000*1.4 = 2800.
You can also practice solving for the principal, P, as
follows: choose an interest rate, frequency and final amount (accumulation),
and solve for P on your own. Then type into the Calculator
your annual interest rate and frequency, and look for the result to be
exactly the accumulation amount you originally chose. (Again, accumulation
equals principal times "rate of return.") If so, you did the problem
correctly; if not, something is wrong in your work.
