Prerequisites: Math 1041 (Calculus I) with a grade of C or better, or an equivalent transfer.

Course Goals: Successful students in this course will learn: (1) techniques and applications of integration, and (2) infinite series.

Course Topics: The definite integral; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; applications of the definite integral; techniques of integration; improper integrals; sequences and series, including power and Taylor series.

Assigned Work: Homework will be assigned regularly, and students will be expected to put significant effort into completing the homework. Homework will not be collected, but the quizzes, midterms, and final exam will all be largely based on the assigned homework problems. Solutions to homework problems will be discussed in class, as time permits. Supplemental review problems from COW (Calculus on the Web) will also be assigned; see: http://cow.math.temple.edu

Quizzes: Will be given regularly, announced in advance in class. When computing the overall quiz grade, the lowest two scores will be dropped. No make-up quizzes will be given. Unexcused missed quizzes will receive a score of zero.

MSRC: The MSRC (Math and Science Resource Center), 1810 Liacouras Walk - Rooms 201 and 208, http://www.temple.edu/msrc, offers tutoring (walk-in and online) for Math 1042. The MSRC will also run review sessions prior to the midterms and final exam. Scheduling of review sessions will be announced in class, and will be posted on the MSRC website. Students are strongly urged to make use of this opportunity, and in particular, students should plan to attend the review sessions.

Calculator Policy: No calculators will be allowed on exams or quizzes.

General Information:

Students will be charged for a course unless a withdrawal form is processed by a registration office of the University by the Drop/Add deadline date. The Drop/Add deadline date is published in the Class Schedule each semester and is at the end of the second week of the semester or the third day of each summer session. For this semester, the crucial dates are as follows:

The last day to drop (tuition refund available) is Monday, February 4.

Spring recess is the week of March 9.

The last day to withdraw (no refund) is Monday, March 31.

The last day of classes is Monday, May 5.

During the first two weeks of the fall or spring semester or summer sessions, students may withdraw from a course with no record of the class appearing on the transcript. In weeks three through nine of the fall or spring semester, or during weeks three and four of summer sessions, the student may withdraw with the advisor's permission. The course will be recorded on the transcript with the instructor's notation of "W," indicating that the student withdrew. After week nine of the fall or spring semester, or week four of summer sessions, students may not withdraw from courses. No student may withdraw from more than five courses during the duration of his/her studies to earn a bachelor's degree. A student may not withdraw from the same course more than once. Students who miss the final exam and do not make alternative arrangements before the grades are turned in will be graded F.
