Studying Tips:
There are four things that any student can do to succeed in this class.
(1) Read the book:
Reading mathematics can be difficult and it can often take much longer than reading other material. Do not let this discourage you. I highly recommend that you read each section after we cover it in class. When you read, try to make sure that you understand every step (this might take a long time!). Reading the text will give you a much deeper understanding of the material.
(2) Do the practice problems:
After each section, I will suggest problems from the text for you to try. There may be many suggested probelms from each section. You do not need to do every problem. If there are problems that you know how to do, practice a couple and then skip the rest. Concentrate on attempting problems that you are unsure how to do. When starting a problem, do not immediately give up if you do not know how to proceed. Think, check other examples, and consult the text. I will use the problems from the text when making up tests. Click here to see the Suggested Practice Problems.
(3) Use Caluclus on the Web:
This tool is like having a tutoring working one on one with you. COW will help you develop methods for solving problems and methods to identify your mistakes. I will also you COW problems when making up the tests.
(4) Attendance:
Attendance is part of your grade, but it is also very important for other reasons. Especially in the summer, the class moves very fast and you could be very far behind if you miss even a single class. Also, there will not be any make-up tests, so please be sure to consult the schedule and keep track of any changes that I may make in class. Please talk with me during the first week of class if you will be missing any classes.
