aaron's Journal

I have included in this section some random mathematical thoughts. Some are for the purpose of helping the teacher, some are about math in the news, some are papers that will not be published elsewhere, and some are just some notes I've made.

  1. The Census Taker [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
This is an exercise in logic and careful reading. And it can be solved!
  2. The Monk and the Mountain [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
A first semester calculus problem in disguise.
  3. A Simple Second Derivative Test [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
A short exercise that simplifies the evaluation of many second derivatives.
  4. Solution to AMM Problem 10529 [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
An inequality about means. It was actually the first monthly problem I tried to solve.
  5. Math Note: A 2-Coloring of [1,n] Must Have More Than n2/38 + O(n) Monochromatic 3-term Arithmetic Progressions [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
We use a technique of Graham, Rodl, and Rucinski to show the desired result.
  6. On the Asymptotic Behavior of Schur Triples [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
This is a technical companion to the paper "A 2-Coloring of [1,N] can have N2/22 + O(N) Monochromatic Schur Triples, but not less".
  7. That's A, Not L [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
An article about Dateline and the Birthday problem.
  8. Job Searching [LaTeX], [dvi], or [ps].
An article about my job searching trip to the Joint Meeting in San Antonio, TX. Contains some tips which may or may not be helpful.
