Installing openSUSE Linux onto your PC

This page discusses the 11.2 distribution of openSUSE Linux on i386 (Intel, AMD, 32 and 64 bit) architectures only. For older distributions, click here. The mirror server is mirror.math.temple.edu. For Ubuntu Linux or for the server docroot, click here. This mirror is also accessible through the rsync protocol (type rsync mirror.math.temple.edu::).

  1. System Requirements:
    • You have a CD-burner,
    • at least 512MB of RAM,
    • a LAN or dsl/cable modem connection, with a dynamically provided IP number (the latter is usually the case with dsl/cable modems).
  2. Pre-installation:
    • Download the boot CD image 32-bit, 64-bit and burn it onto a blank CD. Shut down the computer.
  3. Booting:
    • Boot with the CD you just burned.
    • Select Installation. A textbox called "Boot Options" appears.
    • Enter install=http://mirror.math.temple.edu/suse-install/11.2/ into the textbox.
  4. Installation:
    • After this, follow instructions; the software is downloaded from this site, and the installation process takes between 30 minutes and several hours, depending on the amount of software you choose to install and the speed of your connection.
  5. Post-Installation:
    • Updates and patches are available on our server. Use yast's "online-update" feature in the "control center" on your desktop. First add the following installation sources, which are all http protocol, all on the server mirror.math.temple.edu, and with directories:
      • /suse-install/non-oss-11.2/ for non-gpl packages,
      • /suse-install/update-11.2/ for updates and patches.
